Legendary actor Dilip Kumar died in the early hours of the morning today with his soulmate Saira Banu by his side. Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu's over five-decades long relationship is a love story for the ages - more romantic than anything Bollywood movies can ever depict. The veteran actress was Kumar's anchor and support, his guiding light through thick and thin and stood like a mountain by him, especially since his health began deteriorating. It is unimaginable what Banu must have faced but she never showed it in public, only referring to her husband as her "kohinoor".
"When he smiled at me and remarked that I was a pretty girl, I could feel my whole being taking wing and flying rapturously. I knew somewhere deep within me that I was going to be his wife," the actress had said about her first meeting with the cinematic icon. When they got married in 1966, Dilip Kumar was 22 years older than Banu.
In his memoir, Dilip Kumar: The Substance and the Shadow, the actor revealed that the couple had gotten pregnant in 1972 but the baby could not be saved due to some complications during the eighth month of pregnancy. They decided to not try for children after that.
“I am still head over heels in love with my Kohinoor, Yousuf Sahab, the way I was when I first felt attracted to him as a 12 year-old. Ours has been as good and enduring a marriage as so many marriages that have survived the ups and downs for four decades. No marriage is perfect. How can it be, when as human beings we are not perfect? It is mutual love, respect and adoration that keep a marriage ticking," Banu had said in a 2014 interview.
There will never be another Dilip Kumar just like there will never be another love story like the one they shared.
